This is quite an old shot now – taken in my classroom at school with lots of clutter around and behind the student.  The first task was to remove or reduce the distractions – I could have done this by simply blurring the background, but I decided to cut away the clutter and leave the boy isolated.  I then took it further by applying various filters, primarily posterizing the photo and painting in various details.  Originally my selection was very hard-edged so I have softened the edges, added a little background, some yellow glow and a bit more colour in the hoodie.  One thing I had to be careful of was banding in the various gradients that appeared as a result of all the processing.  I especially love his hair which has come out really well I think.  My most interesting school photos on flickr are here.
