An HDR photo is a High Dynamic Range image which should show more detail than appears in a regular photo. Regular shots as JPEGs are only 8 bit so are limited in the number of tones they can display. By taking several shots at different shutter speeds, it is possible to combine what would be a good shot for shadows, with a good shot for highlights – and so get a shot which is good for both. Since most DSLRs can use the Raw format which is 12 or even 14 bit, a Raw image holds much more detail than a JPEG. So you can take several shots spreading the exposure from shadows to highlights, or take one or more Raw shots and combine them into an HDR photo. The result usually shows more detail, more colour and doesn’t lose anything in the shadows or in a (blown-out) sky. The result can look true to life, or it can look quite artistic or even surreal, depending on the photographers intentions. 92203 Black Prince is owned by David Shepherd the wildlife painter and is based on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway.
